How to Sell Autographs

Honest descriptions, clear photos and realistic prices sell autographs. Here is how to prepare each one.

Research what similar items have sold for

Asking prices tell you what sellers hope for; completed sales tell you what buyers paid. Look for sold examples of the same person on the same type of item, in similar condition and with similar authentication. A signed index card, a signed photo from an iconic role and a signed letter by the same person can sell for very different amounts.

See how much an autograph is worth and what makes an autograph valuable for the factors buyers weigh.

Photograph the actual item

Use your own photos of the item you are selling: the whole item, a close-up of the signature, the back, and any certificate, sticker or hologram with its number visible. Natural, even light shows ink and surface better than a flash. Show flaws honestly; buyers trust sellers who point them out.

Describe authentication and provenance honestly

Say exactly how the item was authenticated or obtained. If it has third-party authentication, name the company and give the certificate number so buyers can check it. If you got it in person, say when and where and include any photos from the signing; see what “personally obtained” means. If there is no authentication, say so.

Never describe an item as guaranteed authentic unless you can stand behind that claim, and never reuse a certificate from another item.

Pack it like it matters

  • Flat items: an archival sleeve, rigid backing boards on both sides and a sturdy flat mailer or box.
  • Balls and helmets: a cube or holder, wrapped and boxed with padding so it can’t move.
  • Framed items: corner protectors, bubble wrap and a double box. Acrylic glazing travels better than glass.

Ship with tracking, and with signature confirmation or insurance for valuable pieces.
