🧭Autograph Collecting Guide

How to Buy Autographs Online Safely

Most problems can be avoided before you pay. Here is what to check, what to ask and how to pay.

Start with the item, not the price

A price far below what comparable items sell for is the most common warning sign in the hobby. Before deciding whether a deal is good, decide whether the item is what it claims to be.

Look at every photograph at full size. Photos should show the actual item, including the whole signature, the front and back and any certificate, sticker or hologram. Stock images, cropped signatures or photos copied from other listings are reasons to stop and ask questions.

Questions worth asking the seller

  • How and when did you get this autograph? Was it signed in person, bought, or traded?
  • Is there a certificate of authenticity, and who issued it? Is there a certificate number?
  • Can you send additional photos, for example the signature at an angle or under raking light?
  • Has the item been restored, cleaned, reframed or trimmed?
  • How will it be packed and shipped?

A genuine seller will usually be glad to answer. Vague or evasive answers are information too.

Check the authentication yourself

If the listing names a third-party authenticator and a certificate number, look the number up on that company’s own website. A matching record tells you the certificate exists and describes an item; compare its description and photos with the listing. It is still an expert opinion, not a guarantee. See what a COA is and how authentication works.

Compare the signature with genuine examples from the same period, and know the look-alikes: autopen signatures and preprints.

Pay safely

Pay through the marketplace where the item is listed, using its checkout. Paying outside a platform, by wire transfer, gift card or a “friends and family” payment, usually removes whatever protection the platform offers.

On CollectorFish, Fish Market purchases are paid through secure Stripe checkout on the site, and card details are never shared with the seller. Read how buying works for the full process.

What CollectorFish does and doesn’t do

  • Every Fish Market listing is reviewed by the CollectorFish team before it is published. The review checks the listing; it is not an inspection or authentication of the item.
  • Authentication details on a listing are provided by the seller and labeled “Authentication stated by seller”. CollectorFish does not currently authenticate items.
  • Sellers must ship with tracking within 7 days of payment. If they don’t, the order is canceled and the buyer is refunded in full automatically.
  • If an item doesn’t arrive, is damaged, or isn’t what was described, the buyer can use Report a Problem. Those refunds aren’t automatic; the team reviews both sides.

The Marketplace Rules and Marketplace Safety pages describe these protections in full.

Keep your records

Save the listing, the messages with the seller, the receipt and the tracking number. When the item arrives, photograph it before removing it from its packaging if anything looks wrong.
