First Cast: A Beginner’s Guide to Autograph Collecting
Pick a focus, set a budget and learn the vocabulary before you buy.
Choose a lane
Collections with a theme — a film series, a sports team, a decade — are more satisfying and easier to value than random accumulations. Your focus can change, but start with one.
Know the vocabulary
IP means in person. TTM means through the mail. COA is a certificate of authenticity; LOA is a letter of authenticity, usually more detailed. Secretarial signatures are signed by staff; autopen signatures are signed by machine; pre-prints are printed as part of the photo.
Set a budget and stick to it
